GENERAL INFORMATION
& OCOEE HISTORY |
The Ocoee River flows through the scenic Ocoee Gorge in the
Cherokee National Forest of East Tennessee.
For many years the Ocoee Riverbed was dry because the water
had been diverted by the Tennessee Valley Authority via a large wooden flume
that sent the water flow to the turbines at the Ocoee Power Plant for
hydroelectric power production. However, in 1976 the aging infrastructure broke
down, and while repairs were being completed, the water flow of the river was
once again turned down the Ocoee Riverbed. Paddlers immediately discovered the
fun and excitement of paddling on the fabulous new whitewater course and
rafting on the Ocoee began. Later, a fight by outfitters and paddlers to secure
recreational releases for paddle sports activities resulted in a secured
recreational water release schedule.
Today, the Ocoee River hosts more than 200,000 whitewater
rafters per year on the most popular river in the USA. Its' dam controlled
class three and four rapids offer dependable fun and excitement on a river with
relatively warm waters. The Ocoee is family friendly and requires no previous
experience. An experienced, FUN guide is in each boat, and guests can enjoy the
thrills of rafting the legendary Ocoee River with its' premier World Class
Whitewater!
